GMAT Verbal対策 as、like、such asの違いを知ってるか【SC】

今日は、GMATのverbalで役立つ文法要素の一つである、as, such asとlikeの使い方について学んでいこう。

簡単に見えて奥が深いこれらの単語、違いは何だろうか?

As とlikeの使い方

As

Asは、①動詞や動作を比較するため、又は、②機能、役割を示すために使う。

Asで①動詞や動作を比較するときには、asは節(名詞+動詞)と結びつく。②機能や役割を示す際には、Asは名詞と結びつく。

Like

Likeは、①名詞や物、ingで終わる動詞を比較する、又は、②類似性を示すために使う。

Likeは、比較又は類似性を示すために使われ、名詞又は代名詞と結びつく。

Such as と like の使い方

以下のセンテンスの間違いは何だろう?

I have been to many European nations like France, Italy, Spain and England.

これは、likeの使い方が間違っている。likeは類似性を示す、又は、比較をする際に使われる。likeは例を挙げるためには使われない。

例を挙げるためには、Such asが使われる。

She loves many flavors of ice cream such as vanilla, chocolate and butterscotch.

ねこ君
ふー。何とかlike、such as、asの使い方が理解できたと思う。けど、一個質問!!like+名詞は、機能のない名詞の比較、as+名詞は、機能、役割を示すっていうところで、どうやって単なる名詞と、機能のある名詞を区別すればいいの?
Palash
おめでとう!今日のコンセプトを理解してくれて嬉しいよ。そうだね、これだけの例題だと、機能のある名詞と、そうでない名詞を区別するのは難しいかもしれない。
Palash
もう一個の判断基準としては、That house is just like ours.のように、主語≠[likeの後の名詞]ではないときはlike。 I work as a teacher.のように、主語=[asの後の名詞]のときは、asになるとも言える。ただ、これは緊急手段で、どうしてもその名詞の区別がつかない時にだけ使おう。

時間をかけてたくさんの練習を積むこと、練習を積んでsuch as, like, asの色々な問題の出題のされ方を経験することで、その違いも少しづつわかるようになるんだよ。

English Version

Today, we are going to look at the difference of AS, SUCH AS, LIKE, which is one of the important tips to find wrong options.

‘As’ versus ‘like’.

‘As’ is used for comparing verb/action, or stating a function/role (to demonstrate ‘in the capacity of’).

‘Like’ is used to demonstrate similarity or comparison between nouns, objects or verbs ending in ‘ing’.

General rule: When used to show comparison, ‘as’ should be followed by a clause. When used to show role, ‘as’ must be followed by a noun. Like is used to show comparison (or similarity) and is followed by a noun/pronoun.

Correct: That house is just like ours.

Incorrect: That house is just as ours.

Correct: I work as a teacher.  Teacher is stating a function or role.

Incorrect: I work like a teacher.

Incorrect: I work as a horse. Horse is not a role. Correct: I work as a horse does.

Correct:  I work like a horse. Showing similarity to horse.

Incorrect: He has joined the army as his father.

Correct: He has joined the army as his father did.

Correct: He has joined the army like his father.

Correct: The nanny cooks for the children like a mother.

Correct: The nanny cooks for the children as a mother does.

Correct: He hunts as a lion does.

Correct: He hunts like a lion.

‘Such as’ versus ‘like’:

I have been to many European nations like France, Italy, Spain and England. What is wrong in the sentence? The usage of ‘like’ is incorrect. Like is used to denote similarity or draw comparison. It is not used for listing examples.

‘Such as’ means for example.

She loves many flavors of ice cream such as vanilla, chocolate and butterscotch.

Our MESSAGE

Question: I understood the concept but I am not sure how to differentiate noun and function. For example, in the sentence: I work as a teacher.

Palash: Congratulations. I am glad that you understood the concept. It is possible that you cannot tell the difference in each and every sentence right away. But look at the positive side. You spent one hour on an article and were able to understand and solve most of the questions. With time and practice, you will get even better.
