IELTS Writing Task2

(Agree or disagree
(Discuss both sides

Agree or disagree/discuss both sides or views/what is your opinion

1Buildings have changed the appearance of our cities and towns. Some people believe that we should build all the new buildings in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2Some people think that companies and individuals, rather than governments, should pay to clean up pollution that they have caused. What is your opinion?

3News media has become influential to our life nowadays. Some people think that it is a negative development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Mass media has become influential to our life nowadays. Some people think that it is a negative development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Writing

Mass media has become influential to our life nowadays. Some people think that it is a negative development . To what extent do you agree or disagree?

(良い例)It is an undeniable fact that in the present society people have been greatly influenced by the news media like TV, newspaper, radio, etc. Yet, people consistently argue that media brings unfavorable effect to human beings. However, from my own perspective, I disagree with this statement.

(悪い例)Nowadays, whether media development is detrimental to humans has generated a heated debate. Views are greatly various from person to person. Some people firmly maintain that media brings unfavorable effect to human beings, while others believe that its advantages greatly outweighs its disadvantages. From my part, I am inclined to the latter statement.

IELTS Writing

① 例を挙げる(for example/a case in point is that/ an illustration is that)

Media which contains too much violence or pornography may lead teenagers to committing crimes or suicide for the reason that they may imitate the scene showed on TV. An illustration is that four students jumped from the same teaching building in a Primary School on the same day and killed themselves simply because they wanted to imitate the behavior reported in a popular violent movie.

Admittedly, news media creates some negative influences for the reason that it contains too much violence and pornography which does detrimental harm to individuals, particularly the teenagers. According to a recent survey, about 100,000 young people commit crimes by imitating the behaviors shown on TV or reported in the newspaper in China every year.

Mass media enables people to get informed every day. Due to the development of mass medias, we are able to know about what is going on around the globe without going out, which was not the case several decades ago when there existed no media and important events could only be passed from mouth to mouth. Thus, people could never be updated.

An illustration is that four students jumped from the same teaching building in a Primary School on the same day and killed themselves.

Eg: Many people think that students should only study Academic courses in such highly competitive society. Do you agree or disagree?

–    Putting too much emphasis on academic subjects leads an increasing number of students to suffering some psychological disorder for the reason that they are under great pressure. An illustration is that a fair proportion of teenagers commit suicide each year by jumping from the high-rise buildings simply because they fail the examinations.

To conclude/In conclusion/To sum up/In summary

(注意点: In a word/Finallyを使用しない)

例1 To conclude, from my point of view, news media is detrimental to people in terms of leading people commit crimes or suicide, misleading consumers to buy unneeded products as well as being harm to teenagers’ health.

例2 To sum up, from my own perspective, though news media creates some negative points in terms of leading people to commit crimes; its disadvantages never outnumber its advantages for it allows individuals to be informed and to be educated.

News media has become influential to our life nowadays. Some people think that it is a negative development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is an undeniable fact that in the present day people have been greatly influenced by news media like TV, newspaper, radio, etc. Yet, people consistently argue that media brings unfavorable effect(悪い影響)to human beings. From my own perspective, I agree with this statement.

To begin with, mass media contains too much violence and pornography(暴力とポルノ), which does harm to human beings, particularly to teenagers. The reason is that most young people, especially children lack of the ability(能力不足)to distinguish what is right and wrong(善と悪を区別する)thus they can be easily misguided(見当違いになりやすい)by the violent scenes(暴力シーン)on TV. According to a recent report, over 30% of teenager criminals imitate(模倣)the behaviours from TV or Internet to commit crimes(犯罪を犯す)each year.

In addition, countless commercial ads(商業広告)are being broadcasted on TV, newspaper or magazines every day, tempting(誘惑)people, particularly women, to consume(消费)a large sum of money on unwanted things. According to a survey, over 80% of the female participants(参加者)revealed that they cannot resist the temptation(誘惑に抵抗する)to purchase(購入)any products which are successfully advertised by media. Obviously, people’s buying habits are greatly affected by mass media which contains ads.

What is more, children getting addicted to(中毒になる)TV media can damage their health. Nowadays, most young generations spend days and nights enjoying television programs without any rest, causing the majority of them to suffer poor eyesight(目が悪くなる) as TV screen can produce a kind of radiation(放射線)which is harmful for our eyesight. As is shown from the report, over 80% of teenagers get short eyesight, with 50% of them being affected by TV media.

To conclude, news media brings negative effects to people for it misleads teenagers to commit crimes, tempt consumers to buy unneeded products as well as being harmful to teenagers’ health.

Undeniable is the fact that in present-day society people have been greatly influenced by news media like TV, newspaper, radio, etc. Yet, some people consistently argue that the media brings unfavorable effects to human beings. However, from my own perspective, I disagree with this statement.

Admittedly(譲歩の表現), news media creates some negative influences because it contains too much violence and pornography, which does harm to individuals, particularly teenagers. An illustration is that an increasing number of young people commit crimes by imitating the behaviors shown on TV or reported in the newspaper every year.

However, the strengths of news media greatly outweigh its drawbacks. To start with, it enables people to get informed every day. Due to the development of mass media, we are able to know about what is going on around the globe without going out, which was not the case several decades ago when there was no media, important events could only be passed from mouth to mouth. Thus, people could never be updated.

In addition, media has an essential function for education. A fair proportion of educational programms, namely science and technology, environmental preservation, etc., are being shown on television, newspaper, or radio, which has enriched people’s visions considerably as well as enhancing their consciousness of protecting our surroundings.

To sum up, from my own perspective, though news media creates some negative points in terms of leading people to commit crimes; its disadvantages never outnumber its advantages for it allows individuals to be informed and to be educated.

Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?

As it is beneficial to both the individual and the society by working on a volunteer basis, a fair proportion of people propose that it is compulsory for teenagers to work for the local without pay. From my own perspectives, I agree with these suggestions for the following reasons.

To begin with, it is an effective way to gain work experience that will put them in a favorable position in their future application to the university and their career development. According to the reports from a large number of top universities and institutes, it is revealed that students with previous working experience including volunteering jobs have a priority in competing with other applicants who have no work experience at all in being considered to study the program. It is also the case in the career field where people with volunteering experience gain more advantages over those(他人より有利になる)without any experience.

In addition, teenagers serving the local community for free, to some extent, help relieve the burden of the society To illustrate this, there is an appropriate example. There exist a large number of childless people living alone who do not have the ability to support their life as they are getting older. Teenagers volunteering to offer them help, cooking and keeping their house in order can reduce the expenditure from the government to employ one to take care of them.

Based on the reasons discussed above, I agree that it is advisable for the youngsters to work unpaid as it benefits them for their further study in a university and their future job hunting as well as reducing the society’s pressure.

The line graph describes the number of international students in the UK during 2010 and 2016.

The pie chart reveals the percentage of various reasons for being arrested in the year of 2007, while the bar chart compares the number of men and women who were arrested from the period of 2005 to 2007.

  2. The line graph/ chart indicates/shows/describes+

  • to be specific
  • more precisely
  • in terms of
  • with regard to
